Ballinteer comes from the Irish “Baile an tSaoir”, meaning “Town of the Stonemason”. It originally consisted of a group of houses built between 1920-1950 which is referred to as “Old Ballinteer”. There have been a number of devlopments built since the 1980’s making it popular spot for families due to its range of local amenities and schools and has been home to a large number of Irish sportsmen.

Shopping
Ballinteer Shopping Centre has All Booms florist, Ballinteer Hardware, Bushra’s Beauty Salon, Spar. Other shops in the area include SuperValu, Opening Minds Toy Shop and a Post Office.

Eating and Drinking
The Blue Orchid Thai Restaurant is a local favourite and serves wonderful food! Libero’s Takeaway serves burgers and chips while Mao at Home serves a wide selection of Asian dishes.  The two local pubs are The Coach House and Ballinteer House.

Transport
Ballinteer is serviced by the 14, 75 and 161 buses. Ballinteer is served by the Luas. The M50 is just a five minute drive from Ballinteer providing easy access to Dublin Airport.

Schools
The local schools in the immediate area include Our Lady’s Girls’ School and Our Lady’s Boys’ School are both primary schools.  Scoil Naithí is the local co-ed Irish-speaking junior school, while St. Attracta’s and Ballinteer Educate Together National School are both co-ed junior school.

The two local co-ed senior schools are Ballinteer Community School and Wesley College. There are a wide range of additional schools in the surrounding areas of Stillorgan and Dundrum which can be reached by bus or car.

Local Amenities
Marlay Park is a 300 acre park and home to Century Marlay House and consists of woodland, large ponds and walks and is the official start of the Wicklow Way. There is a farmers market on a Saturday in the courtyard behind the house where there are also a number of craft workshops, while the recreation facilities include a 9 hole golf course, six football pitches and five GAA pitches, tennis courts, two playgrounds a cricket pitch and a large dog park.

The Miniature Railway is open on a Saturday brings passengers around a small track. There are also two café’s, The Wicklow Way Café at the entrance and Boland’s Café which is the entry to the stunning Regency Walled Gardens, complete with peacocks!

Meadowbrook Leisure Centre, has a gym, swimming pool, 2 football pitches, a tennis court and a multi-surface pitch for basketball, hockey and wheelchair sports. They also have kids camps for the school holidays.  Sports clubs in the area include Ballinteer St. Johns GAA Club, Broadford Rovers Football Clubs, Spartak Dynamo FC, Edmondstown Golf Club is at the edge of Marlay Park, Ballinteer Kenpo Karate Academy, Dublin Yoga for All, Pilates Performance and Danu Yoga Centre.
